[292] S. Does the ordinary person (puthujjana) abandon sensual lust (kāmarāga) and ill will (byāpāda)?
P. Yes.
S. By which path (magga)?
P. By the form-sphere (rūpāvacara) path.
S. Is the form-sphere path one that leads out (niyyānika), that leads to destruction (khayagāmī), that leads to awakening (bodhagāmī), that leads to dispersion (apacayagāmī), that is without taints (anāsava), not subject to the fetters (asaññojaniya), not subject to the ties (aganthaniya), not subject to the floods (anoghaniya), not subject to the bonds (ayoganiya), not subject to the hindrances (anīvaraṇiya), not misapprehended (aparāmaṭṭha), not subject to clinging (anupādāniya), not subject to defilement (asaṅkilesika)?
P. It should not be said thus. …
S. Is not the form-sphere path one that does not lead out, that does not lead to destruction, that does not lead to awakening, that does not lead to dispersion, that is with taints (sāsava), subject to the fetters … subject to defilement?
P. Yes.
S. If the form-sphere path is one that does not lead out, that does not lead to destruction, that does not lead to awakening, that does not lead to dispersion, that is with taints, subject to the fetters … subject to defilement, then indeed it should not be said: "The ordinary person abandons sensual lust and ill will by the form-sphere path."
