[382] S. — Does Nibbāna exist?
P. — Yes.
S. — Is what exists Nibbāna?
P. — What exists may be Nibbāna, or may be non-Nibbāna.
S. — Acknowledge the refutation (niggaha): If Nibbāna exists, and what exists may be Nibbāna or may be non-Nibbāna, then Nibbāna is non-Nibbāna, and non-Nibbāna is Nibbāna. What you say there — namely, that it can be said, "Nibbāna exists; what exists may be Nibbāna, or may be non-Nibbāna," whereby Nibbāna is non-Nibbāna and non-Nibbāna is Nibbāna — is wrong. But if Nibbāna is not non-Nibbāna, and non-Nibbāna is not Nibbāna, then indeed it should not be said, "Nibbāna exists; what exists may be Nibbāna, or may be non-Nibbāna." What you say there — namely, that it can be said, "Nibbāna exists; what exists may be Nibbāna, or may be non-Nibbāna," whereby Nibbāna is non-Nibbāna and non-Nibbāna is Nibbāna — is wrong.
