P. (Paravādin): Is it not to be said that "the Arahant (arahā) has doubt (kaṅkhā)"?
S. (Sakavādin): Yes.
P.: But is it not so that the Arahant might be in doubt about the name and clan (nāmagotta) of women and men, might be in doubt about the road and what is not the road (maggāmagga), might be in doubt about the names of grasses, timber, and great forest trees (tiṇa-kaṭṭha-vanappati)?
S.: Yes.
P.: If the Arahant might be in doubt about the name and clan of women and men, might be in doubt about the road and what is not the road, might be in doubt about the names of grasses, timber, and great forest trees, then indeed, good sir, you should say: "The Arahant has doubt."
S.: Because the Arahant might be in doubt about the name and clan of women and men, might be in doubt about the road and what is not the road, might be in doubt about the names of grasses, timber, and great forest trees — therefore the Arahant has doubt?
P.: Yes.
S.: Might the Arahant be in doubt about the Fruition of Stream-Entry (sotāpattiphala), or the Fruition of Once-Returning (sakadāgāmiphala), or the Fruition of Non-Returning (anāgāmiphala), or Arahantship (arahatta)?
P.: It should not be said so. …
