[639] Sakavādin: Are all conditioned things (saṅkhārā), without exception (anodhiṃ katvā), hot embers (kukkuḷa)? Paravādin: Yes. S.: Is there not pleasant feeling (vedanā) — bodily happiness, mental happiness, divine happiness, human happiness, the happiness of gain, the happiness of honor, the happiness of vehicles, the happiness of beds, the happiness of lordship, the happiness of sovereignty, the happiness of the household life, the happiness of the ascetic life, happiness subject to taints (āsava), happiness free from taints, happiness with acquisitions (upadhi), happiness without acquisitions, carnal happiness (sāmisa), spiritual happiness (nirāmisa), happiness accompanied by rapture (pīti), happiness without rapture, the happiness of jhāna, the happiness of liberation (vimutti), sensual happiness, the happiness of renunciation (nekkhamma), the happiness of seclusion (paviveka), the happiness of peace (upasama), and the happiness of awakening (sambodha)? P.: Yes. S.: If there is pleasant feeling … the happiness of awakening, then indeed you should not say: "All conditioned things, without exception, are hot embers."
