[74] Sakavādin: "Body" (kāya) or "physical frame" (sarīra), "physical frame" or "body" — both being applied to the body, are these one and the same (ese se), identical in meaning (ekaṭṭhe), equal (same), alike (sabhāge), and of the same kind (tajjāte)? Paravādin: Yes (āmantā). Sakavādin: "Person" (puggala) or "soul" (jīva), "soul" or "person" — both being applied to the person, are these one and the same, identical in meaning, equal, alike, and of the same kind? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: Is the body one thing and the person another? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: Is the soul one thing and the physical frame another? Paravādin: It should not be said thus. Sakavādin: Acknowledge the refutation (niggaha): If "body" or "physical frame," "physical frame" or "body" — both being applied to the body — are one and the same, identical in meaning, equal, alike, and of the same kind; if "person" or "soul," "soul" or "person" — both being applied to the person — are one and the same, identical in meaning, equal, alike, and of the same kind; and if the body is one thing and the person another — then indeed, good sir, it should be said that the soul is one thing and the physical frame another. What you say there — that it should indeed be said that "body" or "physical frame," "physical frame" or "body," both being applied to the body, are one and the same, identical in meaning, equal, alike, and of the same kind; that "person" or "soul," "soul" or "person," both being applied to the person, are one and the same, identical in meaning, equal, alike, and of the same kind; and that the body is one thing and the person another; and yet that it should not be said that the soul is one thing and the physical frame another — is wrong. But if it should not be said that the soul is one thing and the physical frame another, then indeed, good sir, it should not be said that "body" or "physical frame," "physical frame" or "body," both being applied to the body, are one and the same, identical in meaning, equal, alike, and of the same kind; that "person" or "soul," "soul" or "person," both being applied to the person, are one and the same, identical in meaning, equal, alike, and of the same kind; and that the body is one thing and the person another. …
