[75] [Paravādin:] Is it that "body (kāya)" or "physical frame (sarīra)," "physical frame" or "body" — when both are fixed upon the body — are one and the same, one in meaning, equal, alike, of the same nature?
[Sakavādin:] Yes.
[Paravādin:] Was it said by the Blessed One, "There is a person (puggala) who practices for his own welfare"?
[Sakavādin:] Yes.
[Paravādin:] Is the body one thing, the person another?
[Sakavādin:] It should not be said thus.
[Paravādin:] Acknowledge the rejoinder (paṭikamma): If "body" or "physical frame," "physical frame" or "body" — when both are fixed upon the body — are one and the same, one in meaning, equal, alike, of the same nature, and it was said by the Blessed One, "There is a person who practices for his own welfare," then indeed, sir, it should be said that the body is one thing, the person another. What you say there — that it should indeed be said that "body" or "physical frame," "physical frame" or "body" — when both are fixed upon the body — are one and the same, one in meaning, equal, alike, of the same nature, and that it was said by the Blessed One, "There is a person who practices for his own welfare," and yet that it should not be said that the body is one thing, the person another — is wrong. But if it should not be said that the body is one thing, the person another, then indeed, sir, it should not be said that "body" or "physical frame," "physical frame" or "body" — when both are fixed upon the body — are one and the same, one in meaning, equal, alike, of the same nature, and that it was said by the Blessed One, "There is a person who practices for his own welfare."
