[1020] One who fully understands the truth of suffering (dukkhasacca) — has he abandoned the truth of origin (samudayasacca)?
No.
Or rather, one who has abandoned the truth of origin — does he fully understand the truth of suffering?
No.
One who does not fully understand the truth of suffering — has he not abandoned the truth of origin?
The Arahant does not fully understand the truth of suffering, yet it is not that he has not abandoned the truth of origin. Excepting the one possessed of the highest path (aggamaggasamaṅgī) and the Arahant, the remaining persons do not fully understand the truth of suffering and have not abandoned the truth of origin.
Or rather, one who has not abandoned the truth of origin — does he not fully understand the truth of suffering?
The one possessed of the highest path has not abandoned the truth of origin, yet it is not that he does not fully understand the truth of suffering. Excepting the one possessed of the highest path and the Arahant, the remaining persons have not abandoned the truth of origin and do not fully understand the truth of suffering.
