[1023] Three formations (saṅkhārā): the bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra), the verbal formation (vacīsaṅkhāra), and the mental formation (cittasaṅkhāra).
In-breathing and out-breathing (assāsa-passāsā) are the bodily formation; thought-conception (vitakka) and discursive thought (vicāra) are the verbal formation; perception (saññā) and feeling (vedanā) are the mental formation; excepting thought-conception and discursive thought, all phenomena (dhammā) whatsoever that are associated with the mind (citta) are the mental formation.
