[288] Is the eye (cakkhu) the eye base (cakkhāyatana)? The divine eye (dibbacakkhu) and the eye of wisdom (paññācakkhu) are eye but not the eye base; the eye base is both eye and eye base. Is the eye base the eye? Yes. Is the ear (sota) the ear base (sotāyatana)? The divine ear (dibbasota) and the stream of craving (taṇhāsota) are sota but not the ear base; the ear base is both sota and ear base. Is the ear base the ear? Yes. Is the nose (ghāna) the nose base (ghānāyatana)? Yes. Is the nose base the nose? Yes. Is the tongue (jivhā) the tongue base (jivhāyatana)? Yes. Is the tongue base the tongue? Yes. Is the body (kāya) the body base (kāyāyatana)? Setting aside the body base, the remaining body is body but not the body base; the body base is both body and body base. Is the body base the body? Yes. Is form (rūpa) the form base (rūpāyatana)? Setting aside the form base, the remaining form is form but not the form base; the form base is both form and form base. Is the form base form? Yes. Is sound (sadda) the sound base (saddāyatana)? Yes. Is the sound base sound? Yes. Is odour (gandha) the odour base (gandhāyatana)? The odour of virtue (sīlagandha), the odour of concentration (samādhigandha), and the odour of wisdom (paññāgandha) are odour but not the odour base; the odour base is both odour and odour base. Is the odour base odour? Yes. Is taste (rasa) the taste base (rasāyatana)? The taste of the meaning (attharasa), the taste of the Dhamma (dhammarasa), and the taste of liberation (vimuttirasa) are taste but not the taste base; the taste base is both taste and taste base. Is the taste base taste? Yes. Is the tangible object (phoṭṭhabba) the tangible-object base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana)? Yes. Is the tangible-object base the tangible object? Yes. Is mind (mano) the mind base (manāyatana)? Yes. Is the mind base mind? Yes. Is dhamma the dhamma base (dhammāyatana)? Setting aside the dhamma base, the remaining dhamma is dhamma but not the dhamma base; the dhamma base is both dhamma and dhamma base. Is the dhamma base dhamma? Yes.
