[293] Is what is not the eye (cakkhu) not a sense base (āyatana)? Setting aside the eye, the remaining sense bases are not the eye, but are sense bases; setting aside the eye and the sense bases, the rest are neither the eye nor sense bases. Is what is not a sense base not the eye base (cakkhāyatana)? Yes (āmantā). Is what is not the ear (sota) not a sense base? Setting aside the ear, … setting aside the nose (ghāna), setting aside the tongue (jivhā), … nor sense bases. Is what is not the body (kāya) not a sense base? Yes.[1] Is what is not a sense base not the body base (kāyāyatana)? Yes. Is what is not form (rūpa) not a sense base? Setting aside form, … setting aside sound (sadda), setting aside smell (gandha), setting aside taste (rasa), setting aside the tangible object (phoṭṭhabba), … nor sense bases. Is what is not mind (mano) not a sense base? Setting aside mind, the remaining sense bases are not mind, but are sense bases; setting aside mind and the sense bases, the rest are neither mind nor sense bases. Is what is not a sense base not the mind base (manāyatana)? Yes. Is what is not dhamma not a sense base? Yes. Is what is not a sense base not the dhamma base (dhammāyatana)?
