[791] One who fully understands (parijānāti) the eye base (cakkhāyatana) — has that person fully understood (parijānittha) the ear base (sotāyatana)?
No.
Or: one who has fully understood the ear base — does that person fully understand the eye base?
No.
One who does not fully understand the eye base — has that person not fully understood the ear base?
The Arahant does not fully understand the eye base, yet it is not that he has not fully understood the ear base. Excepting the person possessed of the supreme path (aggamaggasamaṅgī) and the Arahant, the remaining persons do not fully understand the eye base and have not fully understood the ear base.
Or: one who has not fully understood the ear base — does that person not fully understand the eye base?
The person possessed of the supreme path has not fully understood the ear base, yet it is not that he does not fully understand the eye base. Excepting the person possessed of the supreme path and the Arahant, the remaining persons have not fully understood the ear base and do not fully understand the eye base.
