[126] Now at that time a certain son of an ancient family, whose kinsfolk had all died out, was delicately nurtured. Then it occurred to that son of an ancient family whose kinsfolk had died out: "I am delicately nurtured; I am not capable of acquiring wealth not yet acquired, nor of increasing wealth already acquired. By what means might I live happily and not be wearied?" Then it occurred to that son of an ancient family whose kinsfolk had died out: "These ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, are of pleasant habits and pleasant conduct; having eaten fine meals, they sleep on beds sheltered from the wind. Suppose I were myself to prepare a bowl and robes, shave off my hair and beard, clothe myself in ochre garments, go to a monastery, and dwell together with the bhikkhus?" Then that son of an ancient family whose kinsfolk had died out, having himself prepared a bowl and robes, shaved off his hair and beard, and clothed himself in ochre garments, went to a monastery and paid homage to the bhikkhus. The bhikkhus said this: "How many years (vassas) do you have, friend?" "What is this called 'how many years,' friends?" "Then who is your preceptor (upajjhāya), friend?" "What is this called 'a preceptor,' friends?" The bhikkhus said this to the Venerable Upāli: "Come, friend Upāli, examine this one gone forth." Then that son of an ancient family whose kinsfolk had died out, being examined by the Venerable Upāli, informed him of this matter. The Venerable Upāli informed the bhikkhus of this matter. The bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter. "Bhikkhus, one living in communion by theft (theyyasaṃvāsaka), if not yet ordained, should not be given the full ordination; if already ordained, he should be expelled. Bhikkhus, one who has gone over to another sect (titthiyapakkantaka), if not yet ordained, should not be given the full ordination; if already ordained, he should be expelled."
