[130] Now at that time a number of bhikkhus were traveling on the highway from Sāketa to Sāvatthī. Along the road robbers came forth: some bhikkhus they robbed, some bhikkhus they killed. The king's soldiers went out from Sāvatthī and captured some of the robbers; some of the robbers escaped. Those who escaped went forth among the bhikkhus. Those who were captured were being led away for execution. Those who had gone forth saw those robbers being led away for execution, and seeing them they said this: "It is well indeed that we escaped. If today we were to be caught, we too would be killed in just this same way." The bhikkhus said this: "But what, friends, did you do?" Then those who had gone forth informed the bhikkhus of this matter. The bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter. "Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus were arahants. Bhikkhus, a killer of an arahant, if not fully ordained, should not be given full ordination; if fully ordained, he should be expelled."
