[146]
The Discipline (Vinaya), of great benefit, brings happiness to those of amiable virtue; it restrains those of evil desires and upholds the conscientious; it maintains the Dispensation; it is the domain of the omniscient Victor, not the sphere of any other, secure, well laid down, free from doubt. In the Khandhaka, in the Vinaya [Vibhaṅga], in the Parivāra, and in the Mātikā, the skilled one who acts in accordance with its meaning practices with thorough attention.
One who does not know cattle cannot protect the herd; even so, not knowing virtue, how could one guard restraint?
Though the Suttanta be forgotten, and the Abhidhamma at that very time, so long as the Vinaya has not perished, the Dispensation still stands.
