[147] Now at that time the Blessed One, the Buddha, was dwelling at Rājagaha, on Mount Gijjhakūṭa. Now at that time the wanderers of other sects, having assembled on the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight, spoke on their doctrine. People approached them to hear the doctrine. They gained affection for the wanderers of other sects, they gained confidence in them; the wanderers of other sects gained a following.
Then, while King Seniya Bimbisāra of Magadha was alone in seclusion, this reflection arose in his mind: "At present the wanderers of other sects, having assembled on the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight, speak on their doctrine. People approach them to hear the doctrine. They gain affection for the wanderers of other sects, they gain confidence in them; the wanderers of other sects gain a following. What if the venerable ones too were to assemble on the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight?"
Then King Seniya Bimbisāra of Magadha approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, King Seniya Bimbisāra of Magadha said this to the Blessed One: "Just now, venerable sir, while I was alone in seclusion, this reflection arose in my mind: 'At present the wanderers of other sects, having assembled on the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight, speak on their doctrine. People approach them to hear the doctrine. They gain affection for the wanderers of other sects, they gain confidence in them; the wanderers of other sects gain a following. What if the venerable ones too were to assemble on the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight?' It would be well, venerable sir, if the venerable ones too were to assemble on the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight."
Then the Blessed One instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened King Seniya Bimbisāra of Magadha with a talk on the Dhamma. Then King Seniya Bimbisāra of Magadha, having been instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened by the Blessed One with a talk on the Dhamma, rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him keeping his right side towards him, and departed.
Then the Blessed One, on account of that occasion, in that connection, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow you to assemble on the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight."
