[161] Now at that time in Rājagaha there were several residences (āvāsa) having a common boundary (sīmā). The bhikkhus there disputed, saying: "Let the Uposatha be performed in our residence! Let the Uposatha be performed in our residence!" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Now here, bhikkhus, several residences have a common boundary, and the bhikkhus there dispute, saying: 'Let the Uposatha be performed in our residence! Let the Uposatha be performed in our residence!' Bhikkhus, all those bhikkhus, having assembled together in one place, should perform the Uposatha; or else, in whatever residence an elder (thera) bhikkhu dwells, having assembled there, they should perform the Uposatha. But in no case should the Uposatha be performed by a divided Saṅgha (vagga); whoever should so perform it commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
