[179] Now at that time, in a certain residence, the Uposatha hall (uposathāgāra) was dirty. Visiting bhikkhus complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can the bhikkhus not sweep the Uposatha hall?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow the Uposatha hall to be swept."
Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "By whom, then, should the Uposatha hall be swept?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow an elder bhikkhu to direct a newly ordained bhikkhu."
Newly ordained bhikkhus, though directed by an elder, did not sweep. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, one who is not ill, having been directed by an elder, must not fail to sweep. Whoever should not sweep commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
Now at that time, no seat was prepared in the Uposatha hall. The bhikkhus sat on the ground; both their bodies and their robes became soiled with dust. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a seat to be prepared in the Uposatha hall."
Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "By whom, then, should a seat be prepared in the Uposatha hall?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow an elder bhikkhu to direct a newly ordained bhikkhu."
Newly ordained bhikkhus, though directed by an elder, did not prepare a seat. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, one who is not ill, having been directed by an elder, must not fail to prepare a seat. Whoever should not prepare it commits an offense of wrong-doing."
Now at that time, there was no lamp in the Uposatha hall. Bhikkhus in the darkness stepped on bodies and on robes. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a lamp to be made in the Uposatha hall."
Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "By whom, then, should a lamp be made in the Uposatha hall?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow an elder bhikkhu to direct a newly ordained bhikkhu."
Newly ordained bhikkhus, though directed by an elder, did not light the lamp. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, one who is not ill, having been directed by an elder, must not fail to light the lamp. Whoever should not light it commits an offense of wrong-doing."
