[189] Now at that time, in a certain residence, on the Uposatha day, the entire Saṅgha had fallen into an offense of the same class (sabhāgā āpatti). Then it occurred to those bhikkhus: "It has been laid down by the Blessed One that an offense of the same class should not be confessed, and an offense of the same class should not be received in confession. Yet this entire Saṅgha has fallen into an offense of the same class. How, then, should we proceed?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Bhikkhus, here, in a certain residence, on the Uposatha day, the entire Saṅgha has fallen into an offense of the same class. Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus should send one bhikkhu to a neighboring residence at once, saying: 'Go, friend; having made amends for that offense, come back; we shall make amends for the offense in your presence.' If this can be managed, well and good. If it cannot be managed, then a competent, capable bhikkhu should inform the Saṅgha: 'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha listen to me. This entire Saṅgha has fallen into an offense of the same class. When it sees another bhikkhu who is pure, without offense, then it will make amends for that offense in his presence.' Having said this, the Uposatha should be performed, the Pātimokkha should be recited; but on that account no obstacle should be made to the Uposatha.
"Bhikkhus, here, in a certain residence, on the Uposatha day, the entire Saṅgha is in doubt about an offense of the same class. A competent, capable bhikkhu should inform the Saṅgha: 'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha listen to me. This entire Saṅgha is in doubt about an offense of the same class. When it becomes free from doubt, then it will make amends for that offense.' Having said this, the Uposatha should be performed, the Pātimokkha should be recited; but on that account no obstacle should be made to the Uposatha.
"Bhikkhus, here, in a certain residence, the Saṅgha that has entered upon the rains has fallen into an offense of the same class. Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus should send one bhikkhu to a neighboring residence at once, saying: 'Go, friend; having made amends for that offense, come back; we shall make amends for that offense in your presence.' If this can be managed, well and good. If it cannot be managed, one bhikkhu should be sent away for a period of seven days, saying: 'Go, friend; having made amends for that offense, come back; we shall make amends for that offense in your presence.'"
