[188] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu, while the Pātimokkha was being recited, remembered an offense (āpatti). Then it occurred to that bhikkhu: "It has been laid down by the Blessed One that the Uposatha is not to be performed by one who has an offense upon him; and I have committed an offense. How, then, should I proceed?" They informed the Blessed One of this matter.
"Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu, while the Pātimokkha is being recited, remembers an offense. That bhikkhu, bhikkhus, should say to a neighboring bhikkhu thus: 'Friend (āvuso), I have committed an offense of such-and-such a name; having risen from here, I will make amends for that offense.' Having said this, the Uposatha should be performed and the Pātimokkha should be listened to; but on that account no obstacle whatsoever should be made to the Uposatha.
"Here again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, while the Pātimokkha is being recited, is in doubt about an offense. That bhikkhu, bhikkhus, should say to a neighboring bhikkhu thus: 'Friend, I am in doubt about an offense of such-and-such a name; when I become free from doubt, then I will make amends for that offense.' Having said this, the Uposatha should be performed and the Pātimokkha should be listened to; but on that account no obstacle whatsoever should be made to the Uposatha."
