[19] Then the Blessed One instructed and exhorted the remaining bhikkhus with a talk on the Dhamma. Then, as they were being instructed and exhorted by the Blessed One with a talk on the Dhamma, there arose in the Venerable Vappa and the Venerable Bhaddiya the dustless, stainless Dhamma-eye (dhammacakkhu): "Whatever is of a nature to originate, all that is of a nature to cease." Having seen the Dhamma, attained the Dhamma, understood the Dhamma, plunged into the Dhamma, having crossed beyond doubt (vicikicchā), with all uncertainty gone, having attained self-confidence, independent of others in the Teacher's dispensation, they said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may we receive the going forth (pabbajjā) in the Blessed One's presence; may we receive the full admission (upasampadā)."
"Come, bhikkhus," said the Blessed One. "Well proclaimed is the Dhamma; live the holy life (brahmacariya) for the complete making an end of suffering (dukkha)." That itself was the full admission of those venerable ones.
Then the Blessed One, subsisting on food that was brought to him, instructed and exhorted the remaining bhikkhus with a talk on the Dhamma. Whatever the three bhikkhus brought back from walking for alms, on that the group of six subsisted.
Then, as they were being instructed and exhorted by the Blessed One with a talk on the Dhamma, there arose in the Venerable Mahānāma and the Venerable Assaji the dustless, stainless Dhamma-eye: "Whatever is of a nature to originate, all that is of a nature to cease." Having seen the Dhamma, attained the Dhamma, understood the Dhamma, plunged into the Dhamma, having crossed beyond doubt, with all uncertainty gone, having attained self-confidence, independent of others in the Teacher's dispensation, they said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may we receive the going forth in the Blessed One's presence; may we receive the full admission."
