[222] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu has promised a rains residence (vassāvāsa) for the later rains-entry (pacchimikā). Going to that residence, he performs the uposatha outside; on the day after the full moon (pāṭipada) he enters the dwelling, prepares a lodging, sets out drinking water and water for washing, and sweeps the surrounding area. Having no business, he departs that very day. Bhikkhus, for that bhikkhu the later rains-entry does not count, and there is an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa) on account of the promise.
Here again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has promised a rains residence for the later rains-entry. Going to that residence, he performs the uposatha outside; on the day after the full moon he enters the dwelling, prepares a lodging, sets out drinking water and water for washing, and sweeps the surrounding area. Bhikkhus, whether that bhikkhu should come back to that residence or should not come back, for that bhikkhu the later rains-entry counts, and there is no offense on account of the promise.

Having gone to that residence, he performs the uposatha; on the day after the full moon he enters the dwelling, prepares a lodging, sets out drinking water and water for washing, and sweeps the surrounding area.
