[227] Now at that time, while the elder bhikkhus were making the invitation (pavāraṇā) seated squatting on their heels (ukkuṭika), the group-of-six bhikkhus remained sitting on their seats. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus, while the elder bhikkhus are making the invitation seated squatting on their heels, remain sitting on their seats?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the group-of-six bhikkhus, while the elder bhikkhus were making the invitation seated squatting on their heels, remained sitting on their seats?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Awakened One, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can those foolish men (moghapurisā), while the elder bhikkhus are making the invitation seated squatting on their heels, remain sitting on their seats? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence …" Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, while the elder bhikkhus are making the invitation seated squatting on their heels, one should not remain sitting on a seat. Whoever should so remain commits an offence of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa). Bhikkhus, I allow all alike to make the invitation seated squatting on their heels."
Now at that time a certain elder, weak with age, waiting seated squatting on his heels until all had made the invitation, fainted and fell down. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow one to sit squatting on the heels during that interval only until he makes the invitation, and having made the invitation, to sit on a seat."
