[228] Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "How many days of invitation (pavāraṇā) are there?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, there are these two invitations: that of the fourteenth day and that of the fifteenth day. These, bhikkhus, are the two invitations."
Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "How many acts of invitation (pavāraṇākamma) are there?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, there are these four acts of invitation: an act of invitation that is contrary to the Dhamma and performed by a divided assembly; an act of invitation that is contrary to the Dhamma and performed by a united assembly; an act of invitation that is in accordance with the Dhamma and performed by a divided assembly; an act of invitation that is in accordance with the Dhamma and performed by a united assembly.
"Therein, bhikkhus, as to the act of invitation that is contrary to the Dhamma and performed by a divided assembly — such an act of invitation, bhikkhus, should not be performed, nor has such an act of invitation been allowed by me.
"Therein, bhikkhus, as to the act of invitation that is contrary to the Dhamma and performed by a united assembly — such an act of invitation, bhikkhus, should not be performed, nor has such an act of invitation been allowed by me.
"Therein, bhikkhus, as to the act of invitation that is in accordance with the Dhamma and performed by a divided assembly — such an act of invitation, bhikkhus, should not be performed, nor has such an act of invitation been allowed by me.
"Therein, bhikkhus, as to the act of invitation that is in accordance with the Dhamma and performed by a united assembly — such an act of invitation, bhikkhus, should be performed; such an act of invitation has been allowed by me.
"Therefore, bhikkhus, thinking, 'We shall perform such an act of invitation, namely, one in accordance with the Dhamma and by a united assembly' — thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves."
