[166] Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "How many Uposathas are there?"¹ They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, there are these two Uposathas (uposatha): that of the fourteenth day and that of the fifteenth day. These, bhikkhus, are the two Uposathas." Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "How many Uposatha acts are there?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, there are these four Uposatha acts (uposathakamma): an Uposatha act performed by a divided assembly, not in accordance with the Dhamma; an Uposatha act performed by a united assembly, not in accordance with the Dhamma; an Uposatha act performed by a divided assembly, in accordance with the Dhamma; and an Uposatha act performed by a united assembly, in accordance with the Dhamma. "Herein, bhikkhus, as to that Uposatha act which is performed by a divided assembly, not in accordance with the Dhamma — an Uposatha act of such a kind, bhikkhus, should not be performed, nor has an Uposatha act of such a kind been allowed by me. "Herein, bhikkhus, as to that Uposatha act which is performed by a united assembly, not in accordance with the Dhamma — an Uposatha act of such a kind, bhikkhus, should not be performed, nor has an Uposatha act of such a kind been allowed by me. "Herein, bhikkhus, as to that Uposatha act which is performed by a divided assembly, in accordance with the Dhamma — an Uposatha act of such a kind, bhikkhus, should not be performed, nor has an Uposatha act of such a kind been allowed by me. "Herein, bhikkhus, as to that Uposatha act which is performed by a united assembly, in accordance with the Dhamma — an Uposatha act of such a kind, bhikkhus, should be performed; an Uposatha act of such a kind has been allowed by me. "Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train yourselves thus: 'We shall perform an Uposatha act of such a kind, namely, one performed by a united assembly, in accordance with the Dhamma.' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train." ¹ Variant (Burmese, PTS editions): "uposathā" (plural); the Siam Raṭṭha text reads the singular "uposatho".
