[243] Bhikkhus, the invitation (pavāraṇā) should not be performed in an assembly in which a bhikkhunī is seated; whoever should perform the invitation commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Bhikkhus, the invitation should not be performed in an assembly in which a sikkhamānā (female probationer) is seated, nor one in which a sāmaṇera (novice), nor a sāmaṇerī (female novice), nor one who has disavowed the training, nor one who has committed an extreme offense (antimavatthu) is seated; whoever should perform the invitation commits an offense of wrong-doing. Bhikkhus, the invitation should not be performed in an assembly in which one suspended for not seeing an offense is seated; whoever should perform the invitation is to be dealt with according to the rule (yathādhamma). The invitation should not be performed in an assembly in which one suspended for not making amends for an offense is seated, nor one in which one suspended for not relinquishing a pernicious view is seated; whoever should perform the invitation is to be dealt with according to the rule. The invitation should not be performed in an assembly in which a paṇḍaka is seated; whoever should perform the invitation commits an offense of wrong-doing. The invitation should not be performed in an assembly in which one living in communion by theft (theyyasaṃvāsaka) is seated, nor one in which one who has gone over to the sectarians, nor an animal, nor a matricide, nor a patricide, nor a killer of an arahant, nor a violator of a bhikkhunī, nor a schismatic, nor a shedder of (a Tathāgata's) blood, nor a hermaphrodite (ubhatobyañjanaka) is seated; whoever should perform the invitation commits an offense of wrong-doing.
Bhikkhus, the invitation should not be performed by the giving of a held-over invitation, except when the assembly has not yet risen. And, bhikkhus, the invitation should not be performed on a day that is not an invitation day, except on account of the unity of the Saṅgha.
