[33] Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One, and having approached, he addressed the Blessed One in verse:
"You are bound by all the snares,
both those divine and those human;
you are bound by the great bond—
ascetic, you will not escape me."
[The Blessed One:]
"I am freed from all the snares,
both those divine and those human;
I am freed from the great bond.
You are struck down, End-maker (antaka)!"
[Māra:]
"The snare that moves through the air—
this mental one that roams about—
with that I shall bind you:
ascetic, you will not escape me."
[The Blessed One:]
"Forms, sounds, odors, tastes,
and tangibles that delight the mind—
desire for these has vanished in me.
You are struck down, End-maker!"
Then Māra the Evil One, [realizing] "The Blessed One knows me; the Sublime One (Sugata) knows me," pained and dejected, vanished right there.
