[40] Then the Blessed One dwelt in a certain forest grove not far from the hermitage of Uruvelakassapa the matted-hair ascetic (jaṭila). Then the Four Great Kings (cattāro mahārājā), when the night was far advanced, of surpassing radiance, illuminating the entire forest grove, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they stood at the four quarters, like great masses of fire.
Then, when that night had passed, Uruvelakassapa the jaṭila approached the Blessed One; having approached, he said this to the Blessed One: "It is time, Great Ascetic (mahāsamaṇa); the meal is ready. Who, then, Great Ascetic, were they who, when the night was far advanced, of surpassing radiance, illuminating the entire forest grove, approached you, and having approached and paid homage to you, stood at the four quarters like great masses of fire?"
"These, Kassapa, were the Four Great Kings, who approached me to hear the Dhamma."
Then it occurred to Uruvelakassapa the jaṭila: "The Great Ascetic is indeed of great psychic power (mahiddhika), of great might, in that even the Four Great Kings approach him to hear the Dhamma. Yet he is certainly not an arahant as I am."
Then the Blessed One, having eaten the meal of Uruvelakassapa the jaṭila, dwelt in that same forest grove.
