[43] Now at that time a great sacrifice had been arranged by Uruvelakassapa the matted-hair ascetic (jaṭila), and the entire populace of Aṅga and Magadha, bringing abundant hard and soft food, were desirous of coming. Then it occurred to Uruvelakassapa the jaṭila: "At present my great sacrifice has been arranged, and the entire populace of Aṅga and Magadha will come bringing abundant hard and soft food. If the Great Ascetic performs a marvel of psychic power (iddhipāṭihāriya) before the great multitude, gain and honor will increase for the Great Ascetic, and my gain and honor will diminish. Oh, would that the Great Ascetic might not come tomorrow!"
Then the Blessed One, having discerned with his own mind the reflection in the mind (citta) of Uruvelakassapa the jaṭila, went to Uttarakuru, brought almsfood from there, ate it at Lake Anotatta, and made his midday abiding in that very place.
Then, when that night had passed, Uruvelakassapa the jaṭila approached the Blessed One; having approached, he said this to the Blessed One: "It is time, Great Ascetic; the meal is ready. Why indeed, Great Ascetic, did you not come yesterday? Moreover, we remembered you, thinking, 'Why does the Great Ascetic not come?' And a portion of the hard food was set aside for you."
"Did it not occur to you, Kassapa: 'At present my great sacrifice has been arranged, and the entire populace of Aṅga and Magadha will come bringing abundant hard and soft food. If the Great Ascetic performs a marvel of psychic power before the great multitude, gain and honor will increase for the Great Ascetic, and my gain and honor will diminish. Oh, would that the Great Ascetic might not come tomorrow!'? I, Kassapa, having discerned with my own mind the reflection in your mind, went to Uttarakuru, brought almsfood from there, ate it at Lake Anotatta, and made my midday abiding in that very place."
Then it occurred to Uruvelakassapa the jaṭila: "Truly the Great Ascetic is of great psychic power, of great majesty, in that he knows even the mind with his own mind. But he is certainly not an arahant as I am."
Then the Blessed One, having eaten the meal of Uruvelakassapa the jaṭila, dwelt in that same forest grove.
