[47] Now at that time those matted-hair ascetics (jaṭilā), wishing to tend the sacred fires, were unable to make the fires blaze up. Then it occurred to those matted-hair ascetics: "Without doubt this is the power of psychic potency (iddhānubhāva) of the Great Ascetic, in that we are unable to make the fires blaze up."
Then the Blessed One said to Uruvelakassapa the matted-hair ascetic: "Let the fires blaze up, Kassapa."
"Let them blaze up, Great Ascetic."
All at once the five hundred fires blazed up. Then it occurred to Uruvelakassapa the matted-hair ascetic: "Truly the Great Ascetic is of great psychic power, of great might, in that even the fires will blaze up; but assuredly he is not an arahant (arahā) such as I am."
