[48] Now at that time, those matted-hair ascetics (jaṭilā), having tended their sacred fires, were unable to extinguish the fires. Then it occurred to those jaṭilas: "Without doubt, it is by the power of psychic potency (iddhānubhāva) of the great ascetic that we are unable to extinguish the fires."
Then the Blessed One said to the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa: "Kassapa, let the fires go out."
"Let them go out, great ascetic."
All at once the five hundred fires went out.
Then it occurred to the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa: "Truly the great ascetic is of great psychic power, of great might, in that even the fires will go out. But he is certainly not an arahant, as I am."
