[49] Now at that time, on the cold winter nights, in the eight-day period between the months, at the time of the falling of snow, those matted-hair ascetics (jaṭila) were plunging down into the river Nerañjarā, emerging up, and doing both plunging and emerging. Then the Blessed One created five hundred braziers (mandāmukhī), where those matted-hair ascetics, having come up out of the water, warmed themselves. Then it occurred to those matted-hair ascetics: "Without doubt it is by the psychic power (iddhi) of the Great Ascetic that these braziers have been created." Then it occurred to the matted-hair ascetic Uruvelakassapa: "Truly the Great Ascetic is of great psychic power, of great might, in that he can create even so many braziers; but he is certainly not an arahant as I am."
