[78] Bhikkhus heard those people complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes, contented, conscientious, scrupulous, and desirous of the training complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How indeed can bhikkhus, poorly dressed, poorly robed, and not accomplished in proper deportment, walk for alms; while people are eating, hold out the begging bowl (uttiṭṭhapatta) over the soft food, hold out the begging bowl over the hard food, hold out the begging bowl over the delicacies, hold out the begging bowl over the drinks; having themselves asked for curry and boiled rice, eat it; and dwell in the refectory making a loud noise, a great noise?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
