[79] Then the Blessed One, on account of that incident, in that connection, had the community of bhikkhus assembled and questioned the bhikkhus: "Is it true, as is said, bhikkhus, that bhikkhus, improperly dressed in the lower robe, improperly robed in the upper robe, and not possessed of proper deportment, walk for alms; that while people are eating, they hold out the standing alms-bowl (uttiṭṭhapatta) over the soft food, hold out the standing alms-bowl over the hard food, hold out the standing alms-bowl over the delicacies, hold out the standing alms-bowl over the drinks; that having themselves requested curry and boiled rice, they eat; and that even in the refectory they remain making a loud noise, a great noise?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "Bhikkhus, it is unbecoming of those foolish men (moghapurisā), unsuitable, improper, unworthy of an ascetic, not allowable, not to be done. How indeed, bhikkhus, can those foolish men, improperly dressed in the lower robe, improperly robed in the upper robe, and not possessed of proper deportment, walk for alms; while people are eating, hold out the standing alms-bowl over the soft food, hold out the standing alms-bowl over the hard food, hold out the standing alms-bowl over the delicacies, hold out the standing alms-bowl over the drinks; having themselves requested curry and boiled rice, eat; and even in the refectory remain making a loud noise, a great noise? Bhikkhus, this is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those who have confidence; rather, bhikkhus, it is for the lack of confidence of those without confidence, and for the change of heart of some who have confidence."
