[551] An unwholesome (akusala) phenomenon (dhamma) is a condition for a wholesome (kusala) phenomenon by decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya). Natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya): In dependence on lust (rāga), one gives a gift (dāna), undertakes virtue (sīla), performs the uposatha observance (uposathakamma), produces jhāna, produces insight (vipassanā), produces the path (magga), produces superknowledge (abhiññā), produces attainment (samāpatti); in dependence on hatred (dosa) … delusion (moha), conceit (māna), view (diṭṭhi) … longing (patthanā), one gives a gift, undertakes virtue, performs the uposatha observance, produces jhāna, produces insight, produces the path, produces superknowledge, produces attainment. Lust … hatred, delusion, conceit, view … longing is a condition for faith (saddhā), for virtue, for learning (suta), for generosity (cāga), for wisdom (paññā) by decisive-support condition. Having killed a living being, in order to counteract it, one gives a gift, undertakes virtue, performs the uposatha observance, produces jhāna, produces insight, produces the path, produces superknowledge, produces attainment. Having taken what is not given … having spoken falsehood, having spoken divisively, having spoken harshly, having uttered idle chatter, having broken into a house, having carried off plunder, having burgled an isolated house, having lain in wait on the highway, having gone to another's wife, having sacked a village … having sacked a market town, in order to counteract it, one gives a gift, undertakes virtue, performs the uposatha observance, produces jhāna, produces insight, produces the path, produces superknowledge, produces attainment. Having deprived one's mother of life, in order to counteract it, one gives a gift, undertakes virtue, performs the uposatha observance. Having deprived one's father of life … having deprived an Arahant of life … having, with a malevolent mind (citta), shed the blood of the Tathāgata … having caused a schism in the Saṅgha, in order to counteract it, one gives a gift, undertakes virtue, performs the uposatha observance.
