[255] Dependent on a material phenomenon (rūpī dhamma), a material phenomenon arises by root condition (hetu-paccaya): dependent on one primary element (mahābhūta), three primary elements [arise]; [dependent on] two primary elements … dependent on the primary elements, mind-originated form (cittasamuṭṭhāna-rūpa) and kamma-born form (kaṭattā-rūpa) — [that is,] derived form (upādā-rūpa) — [arise].
Dependent on a material phenomenon, an immaterial phenomenon (arūpī dhamma) arises by root condition: at the moment of rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi), dependent on the base (vatthu), the immaterial aggregates (arūpino khandhā) [arise].
