[255] Dependent on a material phenomenon (rūpī dhamma), a material phenomenon arises by root condition (hetu-paccaya): dependent on one primary element (mahābhūta), three primary elements [arise]; [dependent on] two primary elements … dependent on the primary elements, mind-originated form (cittasamuṭṭhāna-rūpa) and kamma-born form (kaṭattā-rūpa) — [that is,] derived form (upādā-rūpa) — [arise]. Dependent on a material phenomenon, an immaterial phenomenon (arūpī dhamma) arises by root condition: at the moment of rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi), dependent on the base (vatthu), the immaterial aggregates (arūpino khandhā) [arise]. Dependent on a material phenomenon, material and immaterial phenomena arise by root condition: at the moment of rebirth-linking, dependent on the base, the immaterial aggregates [arise]; dependent on the primary elements, kamma-born form [arises]. Dependent on an immaterial phenomenon, an immaterial phenomenon arises by root condition: dependent on one immaterial aggregate, three aggregates [arise]; [dependent on] two aggregates … [at] rebirth-linking. Dependent on an immaterial phenomenon, a material phenomenon arises by root condition: dependent on the immaterial aggregates, mind-originated form [arises]; [at] rebirth-linking. Dependent on an immaterial phenomenon, material and immaterial phenomena arise by root condition: dependent on one immaterial aggregate, three aggregates and mind-originated form [arise]; [dependent on] two aggregates … [at] rebirth-linking. Dependent on a material and an immaterial phenomenon, a material phenomenon arises by root condition: dependent on the immaterial aggregates and the primary elements, mind-originated form [arises]; at the moment of rebirth-linking … .
