[8] Dependent on a phenomenon (dhamma) that is a root (hetu), a phenomenon that is not a root arises, not by kamma condition (na-kammapaccayā): dependent on a root, the associated volition (sampayuttakā cetanā) [arises]. Dependent on a phenomenon that is not a root, a phenomenon that is not a root arises, not by kamma condition: dependent on the aggregates (khandhā) that are not roots, the associated volition [arises]; external [matter] … [matter] originated by nutriment … [matter] originated by temperature …. Dependent on a phenomenon that is a root and a phenomenon that is not a root, a phenomenon that is not a root arises, not by kamma condition: dependent on a root and the associated aggregates, the associated volition [arises].
