[147] Now at that time bhikkhus dyed their robes with cow-dung and also with pale clay. The robes were of poor color. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow six kinds of dye: dye from roots, dye from stems, dye from bark, dye from leaves, dye from flowers, and dye from fruits."
Now at that time bhikkhus dyed their robes with cold dye-water. The robes smelled foul. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow the dye to be boiled, and a small dye-pot."
The dye boiled over. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a collar (uttarāḷuva) to be tied on [to prevent overflowing]."
Now at that time bhikkhus did not know whether the dye was fully boiled or not. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a drop to be placed in water or on the back of the fingernail."
Now at that time bhikkhus, taking the dye down, tipped the pot over, and the pot broke. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a dye-ladle, a scoop with a handle."
Now at that time the bhikkhus had no vessel for dyeing. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a dye-basin and a dye-pot."
Now at that time bhikkhus kneaded the robe in a dish and also in a bowl. The robe was torn. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a dyeing trough."
Now at that time bhikkhus spread the robe out on the ground; the robe became soiled with dust. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a grass mat."
The grass mat was eaten by termites. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a bamboo robe-pole and a robe-line."
They hung the robe by the middle; the dye dripped down from both sides. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow it to be tied by the corner."
The corner wore out. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a corner-string."
The dye dripped down on one side. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow the robe to be dyed while being turned over and over, and one should not go away while the dripping has not ceased."
Now at that time a robe was stiff. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow it to be immersed in water."
Now at that time a robe was rough. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow it to be beaten with the hand."
