[149] Then the Blessed One, having stayed at Rājagaha for as long as he pleased, set out on tour toward Dakkhiṇāgiri. The Blessed One saw the fields of Magadha, laid out in squares (accibaddha), laid out with ridges (pālibaddha), laid out with boundary embankments (mariyādabaddha), and laid out with intersections (siṅghāṭakabaddha). Having seen this, he addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, do you see the fields of Magadha, laid out in squares, laid out with ridges, laid out with boundary embankments, and laid out with intersections?"
"Yes, venerable sir."
"Are you able, Ānanda, to arrange robes of such a design for the bhikkhus?"
"I am able, Blessed One."
Then the Blessed One, having stayed at Dakkhiṇāgiri for as long as he pleased, returned again to Rājagaha. Then the Venerable Ānanda, having arranged robes for a number of bhikkhus, approached the Blessed One; having approached, he said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may the Blessed One see the robes that I have arranged."
Then the Blessed One, in connection with that matter, on that occasion, having given a Dhamma talk, addressed the bhikkhus: "Wise, bhikkhus, is Ānanda; of great wisdom, bhikkhus, is Ānanda, in that he will understand in detail the meaning of what was spoken by me in brief. He will make a kusi (cross-seam), he will make an aḍḍhakusi (half cross-seam), he will make a maṇḍala (larger panel), he will make an aḍḍhamaṇḍala (smaller panel), he will make a vivaṭṭa (central panel), he will make an anuvivaṭṭa (side panel), he will make a gīveyyaka (neck-piece), he will make a jaṅgheyyaka (shin-piece), he will make a bāhanta (arm-piece); and the robe will be one that is cut up, made rough by the knife, proper for an ascetic, and not coveted by enemies. Bhikkhus, I allow a cut-up saṅghāṭi (outer robe), a cut-up uttarāsaṅga (upper robe), and a cut-up antaravāsaka (inner robe)."
