[151] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus, thinking, "The triple robe (ticīvara) has been allowed by the Blessed One," entered the village with one set of three robes, stayed in the monastery with another set of three robes, and went down to bathe with yet another set of three robes. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus keep an extra robe (atirekacīvara)?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One, on that ground, on that occasion, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, an extra robe is not to be kept. Whoever should keep one is to be dealt with according to the rule."
Now at that time an extra robe had accrued to the Venerable Ānanda, and the Venerable Ānanda wished to give that robe to the Venerable Sāriputta; but the Venerable Sāriputta was dwelling at Sāketa. Then it occurred to the Venerable Ānanda: "It has been laid down by the Blessed One that an extra robe is not to be kept. Now this extra robe has accrued to me, and I wish to give this robe to the Venerable Sāriputta, but the Venerable Sāriputta is dwelling at Sāketa. How, then, should I proceed?" Then the Venerable Ānanda reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"But how long, Ānanda, until Sāriputta will come?"
"On the ninth day, Blessed One, or the tenth."
Then the Blessed One, on that ground, on that occasion, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "I allow, bhikkhus, an extra robe to be kept for ten days at most."
Now at that time extra robes had accrued to bhikkhus. Then it occurred to those bhikkhus: "How, then, should we proceed with regard to an extra robe?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "I allow, bhikkhus, an extra robe to be placed under shared assignment (vikappana)."
