[152] Then the Blessed One, having stayed at Vesālī for as long as he wished, set out on tour toward Bārāṇasī; wandering on tour by stages, he arrived at Bārāṇasī. There the Blessed One dwelt at Bārāṇasī in the Deer Park at Isipatana.
Now at that time the inner robe (antaravāsaka) of a certain bhikkhu was torn. Then it occurred to that bhikkhu: "The Blessed One has allowed the three robes (ticīvara): a double-layered outer robe (saṅghāṭi), a single-layered upper robe (uttarāsaṅga), and a single-layered inner robe. Now this inner robe of mine is torn. What if I were to insert a patch? All around it will be of two layers, and in the middle of one layer." Then that bhikkhu inserted a patch.
The Blessed One, while walking on a tour of the lodgings, saw that bhikkhu inserting a patch; having seen him, he approached that bhikkhu, and having approached, said to that bhikkhu: "What are you doing, bhikkhu?"
"I am inserting a patch, Blessed One."
"Good, good, bhikkhu. It is good, bhikkhu, that you are inserting a patch."
Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that occasion, with reference to that incident, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow, for cloth that is new or reckoned as new, a double-layered saṅghāṭi, a single-layered upper robe, and a single-layered inner robe; for cloth that has been worn through a season, a fourfold saṅghāṭi, a double-layered upper robe, and a double-layered inner robe. With rag-cloth (paṃsukūla), effort may be made as much as one needs; effort may be made with cloth from a shop-front. Bhikkhus, I allow a patch, darning, a hem-binding, braiding, and strengthening."
