[195] Bhikkhus, there are these two kinds of reinstatement (osāraṇā). There is, bhikkhus, the person who has not merited reinstatement: if the Saṅgha reinstates him, one such is well reinstated, another such is badly reinstated.
And which, bhikkhus, is the person who has not merited reinstatement, who, if the Saṅgha reinstates him, is badly reinstated? A paṇḍaka, bhikkhus, has not merited reinstatement; if the Saṅgha reinstates him, he is badly reinstated. One living in communion by theft (theyyasaṃvāsaka), bhikkhus, … one who has gone over to another sect (titthiyapakkantaka), bhikkhus; an animal (tiracchānagata), bhikkhus; a matricide (mātughātaka), bhikkhus; a patricide (pitughātaka), bhikkhus; a murderer of an arahant (arahantaghātaka), bhikkhus; a violator of a bhikkhunī (bhikkhunīdūsaka), bhikkhus; a schismatic (saṅghabhedaka), bhikkhus; a shedder of [a Tathāgata's] blood (lohituppādaka), bhikkhus; a hermaphrodite (ubhatobyañjanaka), bhikkhus, has not merited reinstatement; if the Saṅgha reinstates him, he is badly reinstated. This, bhikkhus, is called the person who has not merited reinstatement, who, if the Saṅgha reinstates him, is badly reinstated.
And which, bhikkhus, is the person who has not merited reinstatement, who, if the Saṅgha reinstates him, is well reinstated? One with a hand cut off, bhikkhus, has not merited reinstatement; if the Saṅgha reinstates him, he is well reinstated. One with a foot cut off, bhikkhus, … one with hand and foot cut off, bhikkhus; one with an ear cut off, bhikkhus; one with the nose cut off, bhikkhus; one with ear and nose cut off, bhikkhus; one with fingers cut off, bhikkhus; one with thumbs [and big toes] cut off (aḷacchinna), bhikkhus; one with severed tendons (kaṇḍaracchinna), bhikkhus; one with webbed hands (phaṇahatthaka), bhikkhus; a hunchback, bhikkhus; a dwarf, bhikkhus; one with a goitre, bhikkhus; one who has been branded (lakkhaṇāhata), bhikkhus; one scarred by flogging (kasāhata), bhikkhus; a proclaimed criminal (likhitaka), bhikkhus; one afflicted with elephantiasis (sīpadī), bhikkhus; one with a grievous disease (pāparogī), bhikkhus; one who disgraces the assembly [by deformity] (parisadūsaka), bhikkhus; one blind in one eye (kāṇa), bhikkhus; one with a withered or crooked limb (kuṇī), bhikkhus; one who is lame (khañja), bhikkhus; one paralyzed on one side (pakkhahata), bhikkhus; one crippled in movement (chinniriyapatha), bhikkhus; one weak from old age, bhikkhus; one who is blind, bhikkhus; one who is dumb, bhikkhus; one who is deaf, bhikkhus; one blind and dumb, bhikkhus; one blind and deaf, bhikkhus; one dumb and deaf, bhikkhus; one blind, dumb, and deaf, bhikkhus, has not merited reinstatement; if the Saṅgha reinstates him, he is well reinstated. This, bhikkhus, is called the person who has not merited reinstatement, who, if the Saṅgha reinstates him, is well reinstated.
