[198] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu has an offence (āpatti) that ought to be seen. The Saṅgha, or several bhikkhus, or a single individual charges him: "Friend, you have committed an offence; do you see that offence?" He speaks thus: "Friends, I have no offence that I should see." The Saṅgha suspends him for not seeing the offence — it is a legitimate act (dhammakamma).
Again, bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu has an offence that ought to be made amends for. The Saṅgha, or several bhikkhus, or a single individual charges him: "Friend, you have committed an offence; make amends for that offence." He speaks thus: "Friends, I have no offence for which I should make amends." The Saṅgha suspends him for not making amends for the offence — it is a legitimate act.
Again, bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu has an evil view (pāpikā diṭṭhi) that ought to be relinquished. The Saṅgha, or several bhikkhus, or a single individual charges him: "Friend, your view is evil; relinquish that evil view." He speaks thus: "Friends, I have no evil view that I should relinquish." The Saṅgha suspends him for not relinquishing the evil view — it is a legitimate act.
Again, bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu has an offence that ought to be seen and has an offence that ought to be made amends for. He has an offence that ought to be seen and has an evil view that ought to be relinquished. He has an offence that ought to be made amends for and has an evil view that ought to be relinquished. He has an offence that ought to be seen, has an offence that ought to be made amends for, and has an evil view that ought to be relinquished. The Saṅgha, or several bhikkhus, or a single individual charges him: "Friend, you have committed an offence; do you see that offence? Make amends for that offence. Friend, your view is evil; relinquish that evil view." He speaks thus: "Friends, I have no offence that I should see; I have no offence for which I should make amends; I have no evil view that I should relinquish." The Saṅgha suspends him for not seeing, or for not making amends, or for not relinquishing — it is a legitimate act.
