[24] The King of Magadha, [who had] Soṇa [summoned],² lord over eighty thousand [villages]; Sāgata on Gijjhakūṭa displayed much that is superhuman. Going forth, and [feet] burst through striving [too hard]; the lute [simile]; the single-layered [sandal]; blue, yellow, red, crimson, and black; orange-dyed (mahāraṅga) and mahānāma-hued, and [ornamented] straps he rejected; heel-coverings and boots; [sandals] stuffed with cotton, [patterned like] partridge[-wings], [with toe-points like] ram's horns and goat's horns; [with toes curled like] scorpion[-tails], and embroidered with peacock[-feathers];¹ [sandals] trimmed with [the skins of] lion, tiger, and leopard, antelope (ajina), otter, and cat,² black monkey (kāḷa) and owl.³ Split feet; corns (khīlā); washing [the feet]; stumps; the "khaṭa-khaṭa" [clatter of clogs];⁴ [clogs of] palm-leaf, bamboo, and grass, of muñja grass, pabbaja reed, and hintāla palm;⁵ of kamala grass, of wool, of gold,⁶ of silver, of gems, of beryl,⁷ of crystal, of bronze and of glass, of tin, of lead, and of copper. The cow; the vehicle; and the sick [bhikkhu]; the man-drawn [conveyance] and the palanquin; beds; great hides;⁸ and the evil [bhikkhu] with cow-hides. The leather-bound [couches] of householders; they enter [the village with sandals on]; the ailing one; Mahākaccāyana; Soṇa [recited] the Aṭṭhakavagga with intonation. Ordination by [a group of] five; [sandals of] layer upon layer;⁹ constant bathing; he allowed hide coverings; [robes] not yet subject to counting — these five boons the Leader gave to the Elder Soṇa. #1 M.
