[253] The Venerable Mahāmoggallāna heard … The Venerable Mahākassapa heard, the Venerable Mahākaccāna heard, the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita heard, the Venerable Mahākappina heard, the Venerable Mahācunda heard, the Venerable Anuruddha heard, the Venerable Revata heard, the Venerable Upāli heard, the Venerable Ānanda heard, the Venerable Rāhula heard: "It is said that those bhikkhus of Kosambī — makers of strife, makers of quarrels, makers of disputes, makers of contentious talk, makers of legal issues (adhikaraṇa) in the Saṅgha — are coming to Sāvatthī."
Then the Venerable Rāhula approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Rāhula said this to the Blessed One: "It is said, venerable sir, that those bhikkhus of Kosambī — makers of strife, makers of quarrels, makers of disputes, makers of contentious talk, makers of legal issues in the Saṅgha — are coming to Sāvatthī. How, venerable sir, should I conduct myself toward those bhikkhus?"
"In that case, Rāhula, take your stand as the Dhamma is."
"How, venerable sir, should I know what is Dhamma and what is not Dhamma?"
"Rāhula, a speaker of not-Dhamma (adhammavādī) may be known by eighteen grounds … By these eighteen grounds, Rāhula, a speaker of not-Dhamma may be known. And by eighteen grounds, Rāhula, a speaker of Dhamma (dhammavādī) may be known … By these eighteen grounds, Rāhula, a speaker of Dhamma may be known."
