[255] The householder Anāthapiṇḍika heard: "It is said that those bhikkhus of Kosambī — makers of strife, makers of quarrels, makers of disputes, makers of contentious talk, makers of legal issues (adhikaraṇa) in the Saṅgha — are coming to Sāvatthī." Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the householder Anāthapiṇḍika said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it is said that those bhikkhus of Kosambī — makers of strife, makers of quarrels, makers of disputes, makers of contentious talk, makers of legal issues in the Saṅgha — are coming to Sāvatthī. How, venerable sir, should I conduct myself towards those bhikkhus?"
"Well then, householder, give gifts to both sides. Having given gifts to both sides, hear the Dhamma from both sides. Having heard the Dhamma from both sides, whichever bhikkhus there are speakers of Dhamma (dhammavādī) — approve of their view, their acceptance, their preference, and their adherence."
