[257] Then the Kosambī bhikkhus in due course arrived at Sāvatthī. Then the Venerable Sāriputta approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it is said that those Kosambī bhikkhus — makers of strife, makers of quarrels, makers of disputes, makers of contentious talk, makers of legal issues (adhikaraṇa) in the Saṅgha — have arrived at Sāvatthī. How, venerable sir, should one proceed with regard to lodgings (senāsana) for those bhikkhus?"
"In that case, Sāriputta, a vacant lodging should be given by you."
"But if, venerable sir, there is no vacant one, how should one proceed?"
"In that case, Sāriputta, it should be given even after making one vacant. But I do not say, Sāriputta, that on any grounds the lodging of a more senior bhikkhu should be withheld. Whoever should withhold it commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
"But with regard to material things (āmisa), venerable sir, how should one proceed?"
"Material things, Sāriputta, should be divided equally among all."
