Vinayapiṭaka · Mahāvagga (2) · Vol. 5 · Section 29

[29] Now at that time the bhikkhus who were sick had need of astringent decoctions (kasāva) as medicines. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow astringent decoctions as medicines: neem astringent (nimbakasāva), kuṭaja astringent, paṭola astringent, paggava astringent, nattamāla astringent, or whatever other astringent medicines there are that serve neither the purpose of hard food among hard foods nor the purpose of soft food among soft foods. Having accepted them, one may keep them for as long as life lasts and consume them when there is a reason; for one who consumes them when there is no reason, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
