Vinayapiṭaka · Mahāvagga (2) · Vol. 5 · Section 33

[33] Now at that time sick bhikkhus had need of salts as medicines. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow salts as medicines: sea salt (sāmudda), black salt (kāḷaloṇa), rock salt (sindhava), earth salt (ubbhida), and red salt (bila) — or whatever other salts there may be that are medicines, which serve neither the purpose of solid food among solid foods nor the purpose of soft food among soft foods — having received them, to keep them for as long as life lasts, and to consume them when there is a reason; for one who consumes them when there is no reason, there is an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa)."
