[34] Now at that time the Venerable Velaṭṭhasīsa, the preceptor of the Venerable Ānanda, was afflicted with thick-scab disease (thullakacchābādha). Because of the discharge (lasikā), his robes stuck to his body. The bhikkhus, moistening those robes with water again and again, pulled them off.
The Blessed One, as he was walking on a tour of the lodgings, saw those bhikkhus moistening those robes with water again and again and pulling them off. Having seen them, he approached those bhikkhus, and having approached, he said to those bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, what is this bhikkhu's affliction?"
"Venerable sir, this venerable one is afflicted with thick-scab disease; because of the discharge, his robes stick to his body. Moistening them with water again and again, we pull them off."
Then the Blessed One, having given a Dhamma talk on that account, on that occasion, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow powdered medicines for one who has an itch (kaṇḍu), or boils (piḷakā), or a running sore (assāva), or the affliction of thick scabs, or whose body has a foul odour; and for one who is not sick, dung, clay, and boiled dye-sediment. Bhikkhus, I allow a mortar and a pestle."
