[157] Now at that time the Venerable Velaṭṭhasīsa, the preceptor of the Venerable Ānanda, had an affliction of thick pustules (thullakacchā). Because of the oozing discharge (lasikā), his robes stuck to his body. The bhikkhus, moistening those robes again and again with water, pulled them away. Then the Blessed One, while walking on a tour of the lodgings, saw those bhikkhus moistening those robes again and again with water and pulling them away; having seen this, he approached those bhikkhus, and having approached, he said this to those bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, what is this bhikkhu's affliction?"
"Venerable sir, this venerable one has an affliction of thick pustules; because of the oozing discharge his robes stick to his body. Moistening them again and again with water, we pull them away."
Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that origin, with reference to that occasion, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow an itch-covering cloth (kaṇḍupaṭicchādi) for one who has an itch (kaṇḍu), or pustules (piḷakā), or a running sore (assāva), or an affliction of thick pustules."
